Golf, Sustainability & The 2024 Olympics
As the much anticipated Olympic men's and women's golf tournament get underway, we caught up with Golf Sport Manager for Paris 2024, Paul Armitage, to find out how sustainability is playing a key part in shaping preparations and practices at Le Golf National.
Paul explains how the team are working to mitigate environmental impacts, protect wildlife and manage water. He also describes the importance of working in collaboration all the while striving to create the best possible playing surfaces for competitors and experience for spectators and broadcast audiences alike.
What Syngenta Thinks
Mark Birchmore, Global Head of Marketing, Turf & Landscape
We’ve seen golf courses criticized on social media – often mistakingly - for their impact on the environment, so what better opportunity to showcase the attributes of Le Golf National to some of the 3 billion global viewership tuning into the Olympics.
Le Golf National can act as a valuable example to others on so many levels: it was created from reclaimed land, is GEO Certified and actively collaborates with local and national bodies to progress its environmental credentials. Its commitment is clear for all to see.
On the ground, the turf team have navigated the fine balance between protecting and enhancing the natural environment, creating a product and challenge competitors will embrace, and one that showcases the course favorably to the viewing public (and potential customers).

This is something Paul and everyone involved with hosting the event should be commended for, as it sets a invaluable benchmark for future high-profile tournaments to build upon and fuels ideas to global golf course businesses on how they can enhance their sustainability credentials while maintaining the best possible playing surfaces.
