Morgan Creighton: Inspiring future female turf leaders
In a recent GCSAA survey, 63% of U.S. golf course superintendents described the labor market as "bad" or "very bad"—a staggering 44% increase since 2012. Clearly, the industry faces a significant recruitment challenge, compounded by its limited visibility to women, who make up just around 2% of the workforce.
However, efforts to change this are helping to turn the tide.
Assistant Superintendent Morgan Creighton of Woodside Golf Course in Alberta, Canada, is the founder of Women in Turfgrass Management, a mentorship program that connects experienced female turf professionals across North America with the next generation of interns.
The goal? To create a supportive network that empowers women to thrive in an industry where they remain a small minority. By fostering both personal and professional growth, the program aims to make turf management more welcoming and accessible for women.
Last year, with support from Syngenta, program participants joined the turf crew at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club to prepare for the CPKC Women’s Open in Vancouver, providing them with an invaluable experience and increasing the visibility of women in turf roles at the tournament.
We spoke exclusively with Morgan to learn more about her program, its impact, and her vision for the future.
