The 2020 Tokyo Olympics could trigger a new wave of golfers according to research* carried out after the last Games in Rio in 2016.

A survey of 3,515 female lapsed or non-golfers found that 62% had watched television coverage of the Olympic Golf competitions, and of those, 27% said they were inspired to try the game as a result.

A further 32% said seeing the coverage had piqued their interest in the sport, but they were unsure if they would try it.

The country where Olympic Golf was most popular was South Korea, where 58% of the surveyed group tuned in. This was followed by the UK and Ireland (35%), which ties in with the nationality of the winners of the Women’s and Men’s Individual gold medals – Inbee Park and Justin Rose respectively.

The Men’s competition in Tokyo begins on Thursday July 29 and concludes on Sunday August 1, while the Women’s contest starts on Wednesday August 4, finishing on Saturday August 7.
