Steph Curry: Levelling golf's playing field

NBA basketball player Steph Curry is directing his passion for the game of golf into opening up opportunities for young golfers from underrepresented communities.

The Underrated Tour, established by Curry in 2022, provides playing opportunties for junior golfers, aged 12 to 18, from Black and LatinX (Latin American) communities in the United States.

Curry says his mission is to increase participation numbers and level the playing field when it comes to equity of access to golf facilities.

“Less than 2 per cent of all golfers are Black or LatinX. Underrated Golf is working to change this statistic for the sport with a goal of bringing participation amongst these communities up to 26 per cent to better reflect our society,” said Curry.

A plus handicap golfer, Curry has played in professional tournaments and appears regularly in Pro-Ams on The PGA Tour.

He partnered with FTSE 100 accountancy firm KPMG and leading brands from the golf, IT and technology sectors to resource the tour comprised of four regional qualifiers and a season-ending Tour Championship called The Curry Cup.

The aim is to make golf a more accessible sport for everyone, regardless of ethnic background, class or gender, and to provide access to life-enhancing opportunities, networks and relationships.

“As a predominantly white male sport, the system and institution of golf was designed to benefit certain groups over others.

"Underrated Golf believes the game of golf is for everyone, but we know that there is significant work to be done to make it a just, fair and inspiring sport for all.

"We are building that foundation from the bottom up, offering young overlooked golfers special programming experiences including an ongoing speaker series and networking events with brands and corporations, allowing them to understand what it means to make connections and build a successful career,” said Curry.

Season two of the Underrated Tour attracted juniors from across the U.S. to play in regional finals at elite courses including U.S. Open venue Chambers Bay, WGC venue Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio and The Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Lake Merced Golf Club in Northern California hosted The 2023 Curry Cup.
