Just say yes! The rise of Sally Jones

Growing Golf

It turns out Sally Jones’ lie to her parents was the best thing she ever did.

When the now General Manager and Superintendent at Benson Golf Club, Minnesota, was told by a career guidance counselor that a future in turf management probably wasn’t the safest option, she persevered regardless.

“We were supposed to look into a career we’d find interesting for a career field day, I thought ‘Well, I don’t mind getting up so early in the morning and going to work,’ so I thought I’d investigate it,” Jones told Syngenta.

Her research led her to Penn State (Pennsylvania State University), but it was the furthest college from her home, and her parents also told her no.

“They didn’t want me going so far across the country but I applied without them knowing and I got in. Being told no pushed me even harder.”

Jones was offered her current position a year out of college, aged just 23, and nowadays finds herself starting each day on the course before looking at HR and payroll.

“You might even find me on the beer cart,” Jones added.
